I know the general advantages and disadvantages of APFS and HFS+, but which one will store my photos and keep them stable the best? I am more concerned about stability and integrity than speed. It sounds like there might be advantages to HFS+, even on newer machines- especially when talking about formatting an external hard drive. It seems on the surface that APFS would be the obvious solution, but when I read in depth articles, I get confused by the discussion of partitions and such. My understanding is that using a Mac-only format would lessen the chances of corrupted files so I have narrowed the choices to APFS and HFS+. I have had issues with permissions being messed up and data corrupted in some older files. I always formatted my external drives in FAT32 or exFAT so that I could use them on Windows if I wanted, but that is very rarely a concern. I just bought a new 5 Tb LaCie rugged external hard drive and I plan for it to be come my first go to for working and long term important file storage (while relying on separate externals, one with time machine, just in case).
